Good question. Really like some of the suggestions on the Quora post. Here are my thoughts. Crime map and school bus use cases are inspired from above authors.
My favorite one is the Topic-driven Interactive Map. For example, below student has logged into her Google Maps account and selected the History mode. Upon login, the student navigates to the Chapter of the day about Pearl Harbor. On hovering over the place, she is able to view the place description, chapter #, related videos and the street view. Finally, she can take the quiz to complete the assignment. Quiz link would take her to the Stanford Course page. Note that, the URL is tailored to the course, and the video icons indicate the state of viewed and pending.
